GN-11 "ABRAHAM: THE FATHER OF US ALL"

Excerpt From Act I - "The First Encounter"
God: That's capital "G."

Abraham: What do you mean, capital "G"?

God: Well, when you said God, you were thinking small letter "g." But I AM the one and only God, and therefore it's a capital "G."

Abraham: How did you do that?

God: You mean, read your mind?

Abraham: (He takes a step back.) You did it again!

God: Reading your mind is like reading an open book.

Abraham: But you don't look --

God: I take on many different forms. One day I AM a burning bush, the next a pillar of fire, then a small quiet voice, and today, well, I chose to look like a human being.

Abraham: But you don't--

God: How many gods have you seen?

Abraham: Well, I've got two on the mantle over the fireplace. They both look (He makes a scary face.) pretty mean. You, well, you couldn't scare anyone with a face like that.

God: But I'm not in the business of scaring people. I AM in the business of loving people.

Abraham: A god--

God: (Shaking his finger.) There you go with that small letter "g" again.

Abraham: All right, a God who loves people. (Scratching his head) That's a new one on me.

God: In the next few years, there are going to be a lot of "new ones" on people.

Abraham: Well good for you, capital "G" God!

God: And it all begins with you.

Abraham: Me? What begins with me?

God: My plan to save the world. It all begins with you.

Abraham: Are you nuts? That's a young man's work. Why I--

God: Excuses, excuses. Everybody's got one. This one says he's too old. That one says he's too young. Another one says he stutters. They're just excuses, that's all. But with me, excuses are opportunities.

Abraham: Boy, you are good! Ever think about selling steak knives at the fair? I believe you could sell--

God: Refrigerators to the Eskimos?

Abraham: What?

Excerpt From Act III - "The Final Journey"
God: Abraham, listen to me. Since man first sinned, he has been trying to atone for it with sacrifices. Sometimes a bird. Sometimes a ram. Sometimes a bull. Sometimes a child.

Abraham: So, Isaac was going to pay for my sins with his life?

God: No one can pay for your sins.

Abraham: Why not?

God: If the price of sin is going to be paid for, a sinless person must die. You, Sarah, Isaac, not one of you is sinless.

Abraham: Then why did you make me do it?

God: To show the world that I don't want thousands of rams. I don't want rivers of oil. I don't want your children. There is nothing you can say or do that will remove your sins.

Abraham: So, what does this have to do with Isaac and me?

God: Remember that you were going to be a blessing to the nations?

Abraham: Yes.

God: Well, through you, I was letting the world know that human sacrifice is not the way to pay for your sins. I stopped you because I want people to know that you can never atone for your own sins. I want people to know that your sins can't be paid for with the life of another sinful human being.

Abraham: Well, that's good. You have no idea what it's like. You will never know what it is like to come (He puts thumb and index finger together.) this close to losing your child.

God: Closer than you think.

Abraham: What are you talking about?

God: Remember the first time we met?

Abraham: (He thinks.) Yeah.

God: Remember I told you that I was a God of love. That I loved people so much that I was going to pay for their sin.

Abraham: Yeah, it's coming back to me now.

God: I told you that a sinless person would have pay the price. I told you that I loved you, that I loved the world so much that I was going to sacrifice my Son, my only Son.

Abraham: Yes, I remember now.

God: Well, Abraham, the time is coming.
