GN-10 "NOAH: THE FLOOD OF '93"

Excerpt From Act I - "Before the Flood"
GOD: Look, you've got to trust me.

NOAH: You know, people have called me eccentric, even loony occasionally, but if you think you can put one over on me. . . Tennis? Cement? God? Right! Do you think I just fell off the turnip cart? Who put you up to this?

GOD: Look, no one put me up to this. Tennis is a game. I'm God. And don't even think about calling the psychiatrist at Happy Dale Sanitarium.

NOAH: (Amazed) How did you know I was thinking about calling the sanitarium?

GOD: Because I'm God and I know what you think. Now, will you listen to me? We've got a lot to do and a very little time to do it.

NOAH: All right, I'll play along.

GOD: Noah, have you noticed the condition of the world lately?

NOAH: Are you talking environmentally or just the general overall shape of things?

GOD: The general overall shape of things.

NOAH: It's a mess. Pick up the paper. Watch the evening news. It's terrible. Crime, corruption, abuse, murder. It's like a terrible disease infecting and destroying the whole world. It makes me sick.

GOD: How do you think I feel? I created it all. That's why I'm convinced that it's time for some drastic action.

NOAH: Drastic action, huh? I'm not sure I get what you mean.

GOD: Well, when I created the world, the whole thing, people included, it was good. Everything was just wonderful, but then disaster struck.

NOAH: Yes, I know. The Holy Scrolls give a very good account of how Adam and Eve disobeyed and fouled everything up.

GOD: You really know your scripture, don't you?

NOAH: Sure do. You told Adam and Eve that on the day they disobeyed you they would die. And then you tossed them out of the Garden of Eden, and things have pretty much been a mess since then. Not much to look at and say "good" about anymore.

GOD: Yes, and it has only gotten worse.

NOAH: You know, I think I might have a clue as to what went wrong.

GOD: Go ahead. I'd be interested to hear this.

NOAH: Remember you told Adam and Eve on the day they sinned that they would die?

GOD: Yes, I remember. I thought that would be enough to deter them.

NOAH: Well, the problem is that you didn't deliver.

GOD: I didn't what?

Excerpt From Act III - "After the Flood"
GOD: I'll take the bet.

NOAH: Will you bet your life?

GOD: I'll bet something more precious to me than that.

NOAH: What's that?

GOD: One day, years from now when the time is right, I will bet the life of my son, my only son, so that all who believe in him will not die, but will have everlasting life.

NOAH: (Incredulous.) You'd bet the life of your son?

GOD: Yes, because that's how much I love the world.

NOAH: I guess if you are willing to give up your son, well, does that mean there will be no more floods?

GOD: No more floods, I promise.

NOAH: You know, if we go out there and start telling people how much you love them, and then woooosh, water, water everywhere. . .

GOD: No more floods, I promise.

NOAH: But what if you forget?

GOD: I'm God. I won't forget.

NOAH: Well, that's easy for you to say. How about some kind of sign? Nothing big. Nothing flashy or showy. Just a little sign so the next time it rains, I don't break out in a cold sweat.

GOD: A sign, huh?

NOAH: Just a little itsy, bitsy sign.

GOD: I'll tell you what. I will hang my bow in the sky. Every time it rains you will see it, and you will know that I am not going to destroy the world.

NOAH: All right. I've followed you this far. (He looks out.) God, it's beautiful up here. No pain, no suffering, no misery.

GOD: Noah, remember this: Glory on the mountain top is worthless without service in the valley. Are you ready to serve?

NOAH: (He looks around.) I guess so.

GOD: Then let's go. (God starts to walk off.)

NOAH: You mean you're going with me?

GOD: (He puts his arm around Noah's shoulder.) Noah, I never send my people where I won't go.

NOAH: You know, this could be the start of a beautiful friendship. (They walk off with God's arm around Noah.)
