LE-09 "The Passion According to Mark"

Excerpt from Drama 6
Priest 1: Not everyone in our brotherhood is as open and enlightened as we are.

Judas: You could come to him.

Scribe 2: I'm afraid that might frighten him, too. And if the whole Sanhedrin came to meet him, well, it would cause quite a scene.

Priest 2: Might tip the Romans off.

Judas: Yes, yes.

Scribe 2: If you could just tell us where he is, when he will not be surrounded by the crowds, we could spirit him away without anyone knowing, finish our job, and have him leading us to greatness by the Passover.

Judas: Yes, yes, you're right.

Priest 1: We'll bring a few security guards to keep any "groupies" away, and that will be that.

Judas: Now, I want it clear, your only reason to see him is to help him. Right?

Priest 1: (He pulls out a pen and paper.) Would you like it in writing?

Judas: (He laughs.) If you can't trust a priest, who can you trust? (He rises.) I will get word to you. Better yet, I will find out where he is going to be on Thursday night, and I will come and get you myself. (He turns to leave.)

Priest 1: Judas, wait. (Judas comes back.) Here. (He pulls out some money and hands it to Judas.) For your trouble.

Judas: Oh no, I can't. (He pauses.) Well, if you insist. (He takes the money.) Thursday evening. Be ready. (He exits.)

Priest 2: Friends, we have just saved the nation and Judaism.

Priest 1: No blood bath on our watch. Much better for one man to die, than the whole nation. (He looks at his watch.) Look at the time. Nearly 6:30. Time for breakfast. (They all rise.)

Scribe 2: Your grandmother was right.

Priest 1: My grandmother?

Scribe 2: GOD DOES PROVIDE! (They all laugh as they exit.)

Excerpt from Drama 9
Mag.: But I saw with my own eyes. He was dead!

Sal.: And dead men tell no tales.

Mary: Dead is dead.

Man: Tell that to the Jairus' daughter. The widow of Nain's son. And don't forget Lazarus.

Mag.: Are you trying to tell--

Man: I'm trying to tell you that nothing, no power on earth or in heaven, not death, not even hell itself could hold him. (They step back in fear and unbelief.)

Sal.: But the Jews and the Romans--

Man: Do you think some manmade tradition or earthly empire could contain him? "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it."

Mag.: But this is, uh--

Man: Now, go to his disciples and tell them that he is going on ahead to Galilee and that he will meet them there. (He pauses.) Now go! (The women go out of the tomb.)

Mag.: This has frightened the daylights out of me. I'm going home!

Mary: Me too. If we told a story like this to anyone, they wouldn't believe it.

Sal.: It's not natural. It's spooky. The hair on the back of my neck is standing on end.

Mag.: Quick, let's get out of here before something else happens. We'll just keep this our little secret. (The women exit quickly. The man steps out, and after they are gone, he speaks to the congregation.)

Man: (Shaking his head.) That's the trouble with most people. They'll be so afraid of what others will say about them, that they'll keep the gospel story a secret for the next 2,000 years. Perhaps some of you will change such tradition. (He exits.)
