LE-04 "The Passion According to Luke"

Excerpt from "Judas and the Priests"
Judas: All right. I don't know exactly when. I imagine sometime later this week, in the evening. Can you be ready on short notice?

Priest 1: Of course (Judas rises to leave.)

Judas: You'll hear from me then.

Priest 1: (He reaches into a drawer and pulls out some silver coins.) Here, this is for you. (Judas takes it.) It's just a small token--

Judas: What is this for?

Priest 1: (Eagerly.) You're right! Fifteen is not enough. (He gives him more) There, thirty pieces of silver ought to do it.

Judas: But--

Priest 1: Take it. To handle expenses, that's all. (Judas leaves. Once he is gone Priest 2 speaks.)

Priest 2: I guess we can get a good night's sleep now.

Priest 1: Are you kidding? Our work is just beginning. I will prepare the charges. I want you to contact members of the Sanhedrin, but only those who will help us at the trial.

Priest 2: But the Torah says we must have the whole Sanhedrin.

Priest 1: The Torah be hanged! We have got to get Jesus and get rid of him now. Do what I tell you!

Priest 2: All right. (He turns to leave.)

Priest 1: Wait. Make sure you contact the captain of the guards. He needs to have his best men ready at a moment's notice.

Priest 2: All right. I'll handle it.

Priest 1: Do you realize what has happened here tonight? God has put this false messiah right into our hands. For thirty pieces of silver, the minimum opening bid on a slave, we have saved the nation! We ought to be proud of ourselves.

Priest 1: (He reaches out and shakes hands with the other.) Stick with me, my young colleague, and years from now they will write a psalm about us and how we saved the nation. Now go. (Priest 2 exits.) Witnesses. I will need witnesses. (He picks up more coins.) The best witnesses money can buy! (He exits the opposite direction.)

Excerpt from "At the Tomb (Easter)"
Mary: Do you mean to tell me that Jesus is no longer in the tomb?

Joanna: That he has risen to new life?

Angel 2: That's what we're telling you. Go and see for yourselves. (The three women enter the tomb. After a few moments they return.)

Magdalene: You're not kidding, are you?

Angel 2: Cross my heart and hope to die.

Magdalene: Are you sure?

Angel 1: As sure as you are standing there.

Angel 2: Think about all the things he told you. All the promises he made. He kept every one of them, didn't he?

Joanna: Yes, of course.

Angel 1: Then why would you think that he wouldn't keep this promise?

Magdalene: (Pause) Why, there's absolutely no reason at all. HE IS RISEN!

Mary: RISEN INDEED!

Joanna: Let's go and tell the others!

Magdalene: Yes, let's go quickly! (They exit. After they are gone the angels speak.)

Angel 1: That wasn't so tough afterall.

Angel 2: Yes. Their faith was much stronger than I had imagined.

Angel 1: You know why I like this job?

Angel 2: No, why?

Angel 1: Because we always get the good lines.

Angel 2: I see what you mean.

Angel 1: (To the audience.) JESUS CHRIST IS RISEN!

Angel 2: HE HAS RISEN FOR YOU! (They exit.)
